Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain)

Pattaya, Pattaya, Thailand

Overview

Khao Chi Chan, also known as Buddha Mountain, is a spectacular Pattaya-area landmark featuring a giant golden Buddha image carved into the face of a limestone mountain. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and scenic countryside, it is a popular cultural and photography attraction near Pattaya.

Khao Chi Chan, widely known as Buddha Mountain, is one of the most distinctive cultural landmarks in the Pattaya area. Located in Na Chom Thian, Sattahip District, Chon Buri, the attraction is famous for its enormous golden Buddha image etched into the face of a limestone mountain. The monumental Buddha, officially known as Phra Buddha Maha Vajira Uttamopas Satsada, depicts the Buddha seated in the Maravichai posture. The image is approximately 109 metres high and 70 metres wide, making it an impressive sight that can be viewed from a considerable distance. Its golden outline contrasts dramatically with the natural limestone cliff and surrounding green landscape. The Buddha image was created in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Laser technology was used to mark the design onto the mountain before the lines were carved and decorated with gold, creating the remarkable image visitors see today. At the foot of the mountain, visitors can enjoy landscaped gardens, open spaces and peaceful surroundings while taking photographs of the Buddha and the scenic countryside. As an important Buddhist site, Khao Chi Chan also provides an opportunity to experience a quieter and more cultural side of the Pattaya region. Khao Chi Chan is particularly easy to combine with nearby attractions such as Wat Yansangwararam, Viharn Sien, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and Silverlake Vineyard, making it a convenient stop on a cultural or sightseeing itinerary south of Pattaya. Visitors should dress respectfully and behave appropriately because the site is a religious and cultural landmark. For a comfortable visit, allow approximately 45–60 minutes to explore the grounds, admire the Buddha, take photographs and enjoy the surroundings.
